Fairbanks Cold Snap
Cold air has settled over the Fairbanks area in the past several days, sending temperatures near 50 below zero in outlying areas. Lows at our house only reached 35 below due to our elevation above average terrain. However, my drive to work is mostly down hill and the closer I get to town the colder it becomes. Journey with me into the ice fog on this morning’s commute.

I’m am planning to use a portion of this video on Inside Alaska, a site I maintain for work, which is why I mention it near the end. If you are interested in other things about our area, head over there and take a look.

its fun, eh? I’ll take your word for it. And while we’re at it, I’d be happy to send our Alaska air back up your way! We’ve been buried under a very unusual winter storm, over two weeks of snow now, something we usually have only for a day or so if that.
Actually, I grew up in Alberta where we didn’t close schools until 40 below. I can recall days when temps of 56 below were reported just a few miles from us and most kids didn’t make it in to school. It was kind of exhilarating.
But the snow needs to stay in places it belongs, and Victoria isn’t one of them!

Don,
Fun may have been a strong word. However, I do enjoy the extreme weather. There’s something adventurous about 40 below. The stillness always amazes me too. You can hear a pin drop when its that cold.
By the way, I’ve seen 55 below at least twice in Fairbanks.
